Yes, the Manchester United legend himself couldn’t help but compliment the Reds on their rock-solid defense under new manager Arne Slot. And, believe it or not, even Gary Neville — another Red Devil — gave his nod of approval!
Rooney was speaking on The Overlap podcast when he revealed which team has impressed him the most so far this season.
“I would go Liverpool,” said Rooney. “The manager coming in after Klopp was obviously under big pressure, but they look more solid. I think they look really hard to beat.”
Slotting into Klopp’s shoes with style
The transition from Jurgen Klopp to Arne Slot may have raised eyebrows, but Liverpool have looked anything but shaky. With six wins from seven games in the Premier League, and just two goals conceded, the Reds sit at the top of the table.
Slot’s side has not only delivered clean sheets but also struck a balance between attack and defense, boasting the best goal difference in the league.
Rooney’s comments came as a surprise, but his praise for Slot’s defensive setup was echoed by Gary Neville, who highlighted the chemistry of Liverpool’s backline. “The back five has played together for a long time,” Neville noted. “With Alisson behind that defense, it does feel solid.”
And solid it has been. Ibrahima Konate has stepped up alongside Virgil van Dijk, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson maintaining their attacking prowess without compromising the defense.
Even though Konate hasn’t played every game, he’s been a key part of Liverpool’s success, contributing not only to clean sheets but also chipping in with two goals this season.
