Manchester United officials have spoken out about the club’s disappointing start to the 2024/25 season, revealing frustrations behind the scenes after a string of poor results.

Sitting in 14th place before the international break, pressure mounted on manager Erik ten Hag.

Although the club managed to secure a 2-1 victory over Brentford last weekend, concerns remain over the Dutchman.

Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund scored vital goals to give United their first league win in weeks, but they are still 11th in the table, with six points separating them from the Champions League spots.

Speaking at a fans’ forum, Toby Craig, United’s chief communications officer, admitted: “Clearly, we are not happy with the men’s first team’s start to the season. Results are not where we want them to be. There is a huge amount of change going on.”

He added that while the club believes the summer transfer window strengthened the squad, there’s still a lot of work to be done both on and off the pitch.

He said: “So there have been changes on the pitch, but also off the pitch with Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox joining the club. They are transforming our sporting structure off the pitch.”

Despite this rocky start, United remain optimistic about the future.

Club COO Collette Roche emphasised the hard work happening behind the scenes. She said: “Everyone at Carrington is working hard to put things back on track.”

With young talent evolving and changes happening in the leadership structure, United officials are hopeful for a turnaround as the season progresses.

While the men’s side struggles, the women’s team has enjoyed a strong start, winning all three of their opening WSL matches, bringing a bit of brightness to an otherwise tough period at Old Trafford.
