The Chicago Bears were off to a strong start with Caleb Williams in his rookie year. However, things seem to be coming back down to earth. They could gear up for a strong sophomore campaign from Williams by building a strong defense to support him as he continues to grow.
While outlining the top available free agents and potential landing spots, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox suggested the Bears could move on from Kevin Byard and replace him with Miami Dolphins star Jevon Holland in free agency.
“Holland would be an ideal target for the Bears, who have relied on the 31-year-old Kevin Byard III this season,” wrote Knox. “Byard is under contract through 2025, but Chicago could save $7 million in cap space by releasing before the start of the new league year.”
Holland was drafted by the Dolphins and has been a great piece for them. He has established himself as a reliable safety but has room to improve in coverage. Regardless, he is in line to cash in during free agency.
“Holland has a knack for making plays as long as he can keep things in front of him,” wrote Knox. “His heads-up strip of Travis Etienne Jr. in Week 1 played a huge role in Miami’s comeback win over the Jaguars.”
Last season, in 12 games, Holland had 74 tackles, three forced fumbles, four passes defended and an interception. The Bears could use someone like that on the backend of their defense. Byard is an aging veteran and Holland could be a piece for years to come.
“The only real concern with Holland is his recent injury history,” wrote Knox. “He sprained both MCLs in Week 11 of last season and has battled hand and knee injuries this season. He’ll turn 25 just before the start of free agency and has as much upside as any defender in this year’s class.”
