Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson has had a whirlwind second season that has been highlighted by the team’s decision to bench him.
However, the team announced Richardson will resume his role as the starter after a two-game absence, citing a need to apply more attention to detail into his weekly game-planning.
Those two weeks off seem to have helped Richardson, at least in terms of his preparation, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.
“With the Anthony Richardson experience restarting in Indianapolis, the two-week benching ‘definitely got his attention, according to a source close to him,” Fowler wrote.
Whether this will turn into on-field success remains to be seen, and the Colts face a tough gauntlet of defenses with three more games before the Week 14 bye.
Fowler also noted that Richardson never lost the locker room and that the team has rallied behind him because they have seen what kind of work ethic he has.
“Part of the reason teammates publicly supported Richardson this week, via the source, is that he’s a hard worker. That hasn’t been an issue. But attention to detail has been one, according to coach Shane Steichen,” Fowler wrote.
Richardson’s game has regressed a bit from his four-game rookie season. Some of it has been due to scheming while Richardson himself has created issues by forcing tight throws and trying to play hero ball.
The Colts still seem to believe that Richardson will be the future of the position, and it will be interesting to see how he responds to the two-game benching.
