Unsurprisingly, the Argentine star has chosen his compatriot Messi as the clear winner.
Di Maria, who has shared the field with Ronaldo during their successful years at Real Madrid and with Messi for over 16 years in the Argentina national team, explains why Messi stands apart.
Speaking to Clank, Di Maria said: “They are the two best in history. But the best, by far, is Leo. It’s not just about the Ballon d’Or awards he’s won but everything else.
“Cristiano is about hard work and dedication, but Messi is pure talent, a gift from God. He doesn’t need to do anything extra to be the best.”

Di Maria highlighted the differences between the two. While Ronaldo’s greatness stems from relentless training and discipline, Messi’s magic seems almost effortless.
“Cristiano had to spend hours in the gym, perfect his finishing, and push himself constantly. But with Leo, it’s like he’s playing with friends. That’s why the difference is so big. Leo is unmatched,” Di Maria added.

Di Maria has fond memories of his time with Messi, starting with their Olympic gold medal win in 2008. Reflecting on that moment, he said:
“It was such a unique feeling for me. Sharing the Olympics with him, talking with him, and being around him was incredible.
“I never imagined we’d spend 16 years together on the national team, but I enjoyed every moment.”
