The Philadelphia 76ers have started to look better, but they still have not been able to get completely over the injury bug. Joel Embiid got hurt again with a sinus fracture, and then Jared McCain suffered a meniscus tear, which will put him out indefinitely.
The Sixers are 9-16, which puts them at the No. 12 seed in the Eastern Conference. There’s still plenty of season to go, but given the injuries and struggles, there’s a case to be made that the Sixers should pack it in while they still can.
Former NBA star and KJ Martin’s father, Kenyon Martin, explained why he believes the Sixers should shut it down on Gil’s Arena.
“You really have to consider for just this season, get healthy, big fella (Embiid), get right. Let’s develop what we have these guys play, and we’ll re-evaluate it in April,” Martin wrote.
Martin is not the only one who thinks the Sixers should give up.
Gilbert Arenas believes the same thing
Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas believes the Sixers should shut their guys down to regroup for next season.
“You should have cut the cord [expletive] weeks ago. Embiid cut, Paul George, eh, we’ll see. If not, get healthy. They’re not gonna help you win a championship this year, so if they can’t help you win a championship, shut ‘em down. I just paid you money. I need to protect it. You two, I don’t give a [expletive] what y’all talking about. Chill out, go,” Arenas said.
The Sixers owe a top-six protected first-round pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder, which is why there’s a little extra incentive to give up. If they want to add to their core, they have certain obstacles, like they can’t trade some of their recently signed free agents until January 15.
Luckily, by then, the Sixers will know more about where the season is headed. Martin and Arenas are certainly quick to deem the Sixers’ season as dead, but their suggestions aren’t entirely off-base.
