Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has advised Christian Eriksen to leave the club this summer.
Ruben Amorim is expected to make wholesale changes to his Red Devils squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign as he plans for an ambitious rebuild at Old Trafford.
Alongside the new faces coming into the club, Amorim is also charged with removing some established and high-earing stars, to reduce the bloated salary bill currently impacting the club.
United opted to extend Harry Maguire’s contract until 2026, in a move that allows them to bring in a transfer fee, if a club comes forward for the England international in the coming months.
Brazil veteran Casemiro remains linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League and Marcus Rashford could make his loan move to Aston Villa a permanent switch at the end of the campaign.
Eriksen is one name ready to depart for a new challenge and Schmeichel believes his fellow Dane has the perfect option on the table.

Eriksen’s United contract comes to an end in June, and the 32-year-old will not be offered a renewal, with fellow expirees Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof also set to move on.
Despite making a limited impact at United in just over two-and-a-half seasons – including just two Premier League goals – Eriksen wants to remain playing in Europe for at least two more years.
Rumours linking him with a move back to Ajax have emerged since the start of 2025 – and Eriksen won three Eredivisie titles in Amsterdam before joining Tottenham in 2013 – with Schmiechel offering his backing to the move.
“That [move to Ajax] would be a great step for him,” Schmeichel told Voetbal Primeur. “Nowadays in the Premier League you need players who can sprint up and down for 90 minutes.
“The way Amorim wants to play doesn’t suit him, he wants to win the ball back quickly, at high pace. That’s not his nature. Unfortunately, Eriksen no longer has that energy.
“He’s a great player. Some of the things he does on the field are excellent and he’s still so good on the ball and technically. I think Ajax would be a fantastic move for him.”
The Dutch giants are yet to indicate formal interest in their ex-playmaker, but with his United career coming to an end, Eriksen is ready for a new chapter outside of English football.
