The New England Patriots and New York Jets very rarely trade, and when they do, the stakes are usually quite low.
Well, except for one very notable exception–the 2000 trade that sent head coach Bill Belichick to New England after he resigned from his post in New York with a message scribbled on a cocktail napkin.
Nothing could ever top the Belichick deal, but what if the Patriots and Jets exchanged first-round picks in this year’s NFL Draft?
One NFL writer believes that’s exactly how the cards could fall if New York sets their sights on Michigan defensive lineman Mason Graham and neither Abdul Carter nor Travis Hunter falls to New England with the fourth-overall pick.
On Thursday, CBS Sports’ Josh Edwards predicted that New England would trade the fourth pick to the Jets, select Georgia edge-rusher Jalon Walker with the seventh overall pick, and acquire a future second-rounder in the deal.
“New England traded back and Will Campbell is off the board. If the Patriots do not believe Armand Membou would successfully make the transition from right tackle to left, then draft a player toward the top of the big board and explore options at left tackle later,” Edwards wrote.

“As part of the trade, the Patriots acquired a future second-round pick.”
Walker, a junior, racked up 6.5 sacks for the Bulldogs this past season, improving on his sophomore season, when he had five. He’s a 6-foot-2, 245-pounder who ran an explosive 4.50-second 40-yard dash at Georgia’s pro day.
This would be the type of deal that could result in years of criticism for either franchise if the player the other side selected turned out to be a superstar. While there’s no guarantee both sides roll the dice, it would be fascinating to witness.
