Aaron Rodgers is the final major piece of the offseason puzzle for the entire NFL. He holds significant influence right now, especially for teams trying to determine their next steps. Most notably, the Steelers are in a holding pattern until a decision is made. Rodgers is taking longer than expected to reach terms on a contract.

If the Steelers don’t receive a commitment from Rodgers soon, they may be forced to explore a trade with the Atlanta Falcons—one that would involve absorbing a substantial contract.

“Kirk Cousins would be the ideal backup plan if the Rodgers deal falls flat — but there’s a catch. The Steelers would likely need to take on at least $20 million of his guaranteed money. It would be a win-win for both Cousins and the Steelers, should Pittsburgh take on the financial challenge,” Andrew Vasquez wrote.

Reports suggest the Steelers have already received a verbal commitment from Rodgers, which may explain the lack of urgency surrounding a deal. Despite the uncertainty, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur seems confident that Rodgers will end up in Pittsburgh.

“I’m pretty sure they know what they’re doing,” LaFleur said of the Steelers during a recent appearance on Up & Adams. “I’m sure they’re confident in what they’re doing. I would fully expect him to be a Pittsburgh Steeler.”

Rodgers would bring a strong veteran presence to the Steelers, but he recently revealed the personal reason behind the delay in finalizing a deal. It stems from a family matter.

“I’ve figured it out the last year when I’ve been in the weeds with these people who are close to me that have cancer,” Rodgers said.

Rodgers has been dealing with several off-the-field issues that have prevented him from signing. However, whatever information LaFleur has received seems to confirm that Rodgers is heading to Pittsburgh. With limited time left in his career, Rodgers is clearly in win-now mode as he eyes retirement.
