Manchester City’s chase for Rayan Cherki has hit its first roadblock. Lyon have turned down the former Premier League champions’ opening offer for the 21-year-old midfielder.

But it’s far from game over at the Etihad.

Cherki, who impressed during France’s dramatic 5-4 loss to Spain in the Nations League, is one of City’s top summer targets.

He scored and assisted in that match, turning plenty of heads — and not just in France. Pep Guardiola wants to add more spark to his midfield, and the Lyon star fits the bill.

City are said to have agreed personal terms with the player, who is believed to have a release clause of around £25 million.

However, Lyon are playing hardball. The French club reportedly want closer to £34 million for the player, whose contract runs until 2026.

“Lyon have rejected the first offer from Manchester City for Rayan Cherki,” journalist Florian Plettenberg posted on X.

“The second offer is now being prepared. Negotiations are ongoing. Cherki is waiting for an agreement between the clubs.”

Can Man City sign Rayan Cherki before the Club World Cup?

Despite the stalled talks, Cherki is keeping his cool. He is fully focused on France’s upcoming match against Germany.

After a standout performance off the bench, he’s pushing for a starting spot. Not bad for a guy in the middle of transfer drama.

Cherki’s calm response shows maturity beyond his years. No panic, no public fuss — just goals, assists, and maybe a sneaky wink to City fans.

Manchester City are expected to return with a stronger offer soon. With a Club World Cup campaign around the corner, Guardiola wants his squad set early. Thus, City will be keen on signing him before the tournament starts.

And with Kevin De Bruyne nearing the twilight of his City career, the club is eyeing Cherki as a possible heir to the Belgian’s creative throne.

Cherki’s move to City isn’t done yet. But the game is still in play. And as any football fan knows — it’s never over until the final whistle.
