The Minnesota Timberwolves could be eyeing some bold moves in the offseason after getting eliminated in the Western Conference Finals for the second consecutive year.
They have many holes to fill on the roster, notably with playmaking and perimeter scoring, especially with Mike Conley getting up in age.
Veteran Russell Westbrook recently opted out of his $3.3 million player option to test free agency with that in mind. Emon Cassels of Dunking with Wolves has proposed that the Timberwolves target Westbrook this offseason.
“While Westbrook isn’t a star anymore, he is a highly productive and versatile role player. Westbrook remains a high-level playmaker. Moreover, Westbrook can still create his own shot and is a relentless finisher. In addition to playmaking, the Wolves need extra perimeter shot creation and players who can generate rim pressure, making Westbrook a fit. Westbrook is also a tenacious perimeter defender, Cassels wrote.
He adds, “In recent years, Westbrook has shown the ability to buy into a smaller yet impactful role, especially with the Nuggets and Clippers. He has been particularly more active off-ball. Westbrook still struggles to shoot and has some questionable decision-making at times. However, he provides value in every other aspect. For the Wolves, his playmaking and ability to attack the rim would be the most impactful.

Although Westbrook isn’t the same player he was during his prime, he has proven that he can still produce at a high level. Last season, he averaged a significant role with the Denver Nuggets, averaging 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds in 75 games.
Despite his strong showing during the regular season, Westbrook struggled throughout the postseason; his shooting percentage dropped significantly, falling to 31% from 39% during the regular season. The Nuggets ultimately fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Semifinals.
Still, Westbrook could bring valuable experience and toughness to a Timberwolves team that is eager to break through to the NBA Finals.
