James will play his record-breaking 23rd NBA season in the upcoming year, a decision that was fully expected but made official with Sunday’s announcement.

Did LeBron James request a trade?
Despite eyebrow-raising comments by Paul, James has not requested a trade. While James is said to be evaluating his future with the Lakers and watching their offseason closely, any rumor that he has requested a trade is not accurate.
Sunday’s decision to opt-in came with a caveat, as Paul said he and James “want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage of his life and career.”
“LeBron wants to compete for a championship. He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all,” Paul said in a statement, curiously adding that James and his team “consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.”
Whether that is the precursor to a trade or just a pressure campaign to force the Lakers to be aggressive and build a championship-caliber around James is unclear. Regardless, there is no indication James has asked for a trade — even if opting-in makes it possible to facilitate a move if necessary.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Sunday that James will be watching the Lakers’ offseason closely as free agency gets underway on Monday, putting the possibility of a trade on the table, but few know whether the threat is legitimate or not.

If James plays an eighth season with the Lakers, it will mark his longest streak of consecutive seasons with one team In 2024-25, he tied the mark set during his first stint with the Cavaliers.
What is NBA Centel?
Some of the false rumors surrounding James started with X account NBA Centel, a well-known parody account that spreads false stories about the NBA.
The account, which has more than 680,000 followers, is a parody of aggregator account NBA Central and is designed to trick users into believing news stories that are false but often have just enough of a hint of truth to be believable. In the case of James, rumors that he requested a trade are false — but Paul’s statements make the rumor just believable enough for NBA Centel’s tweet to go viral.
NBA Centel was briefly suspended by X in February but came back stronger, doubling its follower count in the months that followed.
