GTA 6 is expected to bring in a GDP’s worth of revenue within a few days of its release, toppling its predecessor’s historic sales figures. According to analysts, Rockstar’s upcoming title is next in line to set astonishing records, including the gargantuan sum of $2 billion in revenue on day one.
The sales forecasts are courtesy of analytics firm Konvoy Ventures, which put together a projections chart outlining GTA 6’s potential sales over 60 days. It made some calculated assumptions in the process, with the biggest example being an $80 asking price.
Other liberties include revenue generated from IAP (In-App Purchases), GTA+ subscription sales, and their overall conversion rates. With all the parameters in place, the final sales projections are staggering, to say the least.
For starters, Konvoy forecasts 10 million copies sold in pre-orders, paired with 15 million copies sold on day one. These sales alone are expected to rake in $2 billion, which immediately dwarfs the $1 billion milestone set by GTA 5 during its first three days on the market.
The projections go on to lay out a strong first two months for the game, amounting to a whopping 85 million copies sold in 60 days, bringing $6.8 billion in revenue. Those figures are already unprecedented, but with the addition of $180 million in GTA+ subscription sales and a further $680 million in IAP, GTA 6 could amass $7.6 billion within its first two months.
It’s worth noting that Konvoy is using some generous conversion figures, 10-20% for GTA+ and an unlikely 40% for in-game purchases, to be exact. But even if those revenue streams are removed, GTA 6 would remain on track to surpass GTA 5 as the highest-grossing media title of all time on unit sales alone.
For context, that $7.6 billion revenue figure is greater than the lifetime box office collections of James Cameron’s Avatar franchise, and more than doubles the $2.92 billion generated by 2009’s Avatar, which remains the most commercially successful movie of all time.
It’s almost certain that GTA 6 will be the highest-selling video game of all time, thanks to the seismic levels of hype around it. But these astronomical figures, as convincing as they may seem, are still projections at the end of the day. So, make sure to take them with a grain of salt.
