The Pittsburgh Steelers successfully whittled their roster down to 53 players on Tuesday and navigated the waiver wire process on Wednesday.
Now, it’s time to put together the practice squad, which the Steelers will do by signing some of the players they and other teams cut on Tuesday.
NFL teams are allowed to have 16 players on their practice squad, and can have up to 17 if they have someone from the International Player Pathway Program on it.
Of the 16 players, 10 have to be first- or second-year players, and the other six can be veterans with any amount of NFL experience.
Two players on the practice squad can be activated for a game each week, although there is a maximum of two activations per player before he must be added to the team’s 53-man roster.
Every Tuesday, teams can protect up to four practice squad players, which prevents other teams from poaching them. If a team does sign an unprotected player off another team’s practice squad, that player must be added to the 53-man roster.
Players who have two or less years of service make $13,000 per week for being on the practice squad. Players with more than two years of service receive a weekly salary between $17,500 and $22,000.
Steelers practice squad signings should start rolling in after waivers clear on Wednesday, but it’s important to note that no reported signing is official until Pittsburgh announces it.
