Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders is staying patient as speculation about his future in the NFL continues to build. After spending the early part of the season behind Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel, the rookie has now stepped into the No. 2 quarterback spot.
Still, despite his progress, Sanders has yet to receive first-team practice snaps, a decision head coach Kevin Stefanski says is about development priorities.
While some players might express frustration, Sanders instead turned to faith. In a recent post on X, he shared that he focuses on trusting God’s timing rather than worrying about his moment.
Sanders leans on faith as Browns focus on development
Sanders’ message resonated widely, emphasizing patience and faith in uncertain times.
“The greatest lesson I’ve learned through it all is not to worry but to lean on and trust GOD in every situation,” Sanders wrote. “Even when I don’t know what to do, I’ve learned that GOD will always guide me. I live stress-free because I know that, no matter what, GOD has the final say over my life.”
He added that his foundation comes from strong values instilled by his family:
“I’m able to persevere through trials because I come from a family built on morals, values, and unshakable principles… True success is who you become while waiting on GOD’s timing.”
Sanders began the season as Cleveland’s emergency quarterback before being promoted after the team traded Flacco and a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Cincinnati Bengals for a fifth-rounder. Despite his elevation, Stefanski confirmed that only Gabriel currently gets first-team reps.
“With a young quarterback, with Dillon starting, you want to make sure he gets a lot of reps,” Stefanski told reporters via ESPN. “It’s different when you have a veteran with Joe.”
Still, reports around the team suggest Sanders is improving rapidly. Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com said on The Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show that the rookie “has been making a ton of progress” and “looks really good” in drills, even outperforming Gabriel at times in red zone and pocket work.
Through three starts, Gabriel has led Cleveland to a 1-2 record, completing 59.8% of his passes for 546 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. The Browns scored 31 points in a recent win over the Dolphins, but Gabriel threw for just 116 yards and no touchdowns.
For now, Sanders remains ready, trusting that faith, preparation, and timing will align when his chance finally comes.
