Jonathan Kuminga is known for being an inconsistent contributor with the Golden State Warriors, and that stipulation likely isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Kuminga is capable of notching 20+ one night and zero the next, which proves the NBA champion forward is still a wild card in Year 5.
More concerning, Kuminga is regressing as a perimeter shooter, connecting on just 17.6% of his triples this season.
With Kuminga being far from a defensive menace who can positively impact games on that end of the floor when he isn’t scoring, the Warriors have every reason to consider trading him before the Feb. 5 deadline.
Heavy’s Jonah Kubicek agrees, citing that it would be in the Warriors’ best interest to shop Kuminga around the league.
“Kuminga is not a bad player by any means,” Kubicek wrote Friday. “However, he has long expressed a desire to be the centerpiece of a franchise. Stephen Curry is still going strong, so that won’t happen anytime soon.”
“Kuminga is on a team-friendly two-year deal. The Warriors could easily flip him to a young team for a win-now talent who better fits their core. Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler are running the show in Golden State. The Warriors don’t have room for a player with any aspirations other than team success.”
“Teams like the Brooklyn Nets, Dallas Mavericks, and even the Houston Rockets could use a player with Kuminga’s skillset and with his same timeline. There would be interest for him around the NBA.”
With a change of scenery, Kuminga could potentially reach new heights as a high-flying 6-foot-7 wing.
For whatever reason, things haven’t clicked for Kuminga in the Bay, and with the Warriors having championship aspirations toward the end of Curry’s illustrious NBA career, the 23-year-old would be better served spending the next leg of his professional journey with a different franchise.
Kuminga, who’s averaging 13.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game this season, isn’t a lock to finish the season with the Warriors.
