The Charlotte Hornets lost by 20 points against the Golden State Warriors on Saturday. It was a bad loss for Hornets head coach Charles Lee, but he did get under Stephen Curry and Draymond Green’s skin.
Green himself even led to calling out the Hornets’ “gimmicky” defense. He even alluded to the Hornets’ coach being fired just because he had that kind of defensive scheme.
Lee responds to Green’s call for his firing
The Hornets might not be the best defensive team in the league, but they are definitely trying. With how they played against the Warriors, it shows that Lee is willing to adjust his schemes against specific players.
Considering Curry is one of the toughest players to guard, focusing on stopping him could lead to a victory. Of course, it did not pan out because the Hornets lost by 20 points. However, Curry and Green’s frustration shows that it was impactful.
It was a necessary adjustment from the Hornets because they felt that stopping Curry was the best way to win the game. It did not end up happening, but the Hornets tried their best to do so.
Unfortunately, that led to Green calling out Lee, which the Hornets head coach is taking in stride.
“It doesn’t bother me, everyone’s entitled to their opinions. There are different strategies, there are different ways to play the game. We thought that going into that game, it was a good strategy,” Lee said on Tuesday about Green’s comments.
Lee was pragmatic about how he set up his defense against the Warriors. That is a good trait to have because he is willing to adjust depending on the matchup.
He might not have the right personnel at the moment, but that is a good sign. Lee took a risky approach, which did not pay off. However, he is willing to make some bold decisions to help the Hornets win games, which they have been doing as of late.
