Stephen Curry has been inactive for the Golden State Warriors’ last two games due to a knee injury.
Fortunately, the Warriors were able to snag a come-from-behind victory over the Phoenix Suns on Thursday night, largely in part to Curry’s injury replacement and fan favorite teammate.
Blue Man Hoop’s Peter O’Keefe believes that the Warriors would be wise to sign the 29-year-old guard to a standard NBA deal moving forward.
“Signing Pat Spencer is an obvious next move for the Warriors,” O’Keefe wrote Friday. “Making his fifth start of the season despite being on a two-way deal, Spencer was electric in the first half (against the Suns) with five threes on seven attempts to lead the Warriors to a 59-55 advantage.”
Spencer finished 6-of-11 from beyond the arc, easily surpassing his previous career-high of three 3-pointers, which he’d achieved twice earlier in the season.”
“The career-best performance came coincidentally in Spencer’s last game of eligibility on a two-way contract, meaning Golden State will have to convert his deal in the next 36 hours for him to be eligible to play in Saturday’s matchup with the Los Angeles Lakers at Crypto.com Arena.”
Spencer has played well this season when Steve Kerr called his number. Although the Davidsonville, Maryland native is best known for his play on the lacrosse field (he was a standout player with Loyola and was selected by the Archers Lacrosse Club in the 2019 Premier Lacrosse League draft), he’s a legitimate NBA player at this stage of his career.
Spencer is a reliable ball handler and decision maker who has proven he can elevate his aggression when needed. The 6-foot-2 guard is averaging 5.8 points and 2.9 assists with the Warriors this season, shooting 42.3% from the field and 43.1% from three-point land.
Hopefully, for Spencer’s sake, Golden State signs him for the rest of the season.
