A standoff between Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks’ medical staff may well encapsulate where the two sides stand amid the Bucks’ elimination from NBA playoff contention over the weekend.
The Bucks’ remote chances to break into the Play-In Tournament ended Sunday with a 127-113 home loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, in yet another game that Antetokounmpo sat out with a left knee injury. Milwaukee (29-45) will see their nine-year streak of playoff appearances snapped this season in what has been a trying campaign that saw Antetokounmpo — who has played just 36 games — unsuccessfully angle for a trade before the NBA’s deadline last month.
Antetokounmpo’s uncertain status has lingered all season in the Bucks locker room, with Milwaukee veteran Bobby Portis describing it as “dark clouds always around” amid anticipation that the two-time MVP will refuse to sign an extension with a Bucks team that appears outside of a championship contention window.
“Our goal is to win championships, not just to make the playoffs or the Play-In,” Portis said Monday on FanDuel TV’s “Run It Back.” “I know (the Bucks front office) will try to revamp the roster, put new guys around (Antetokounmpo). I know there’ll be some type of splash.”

But a “splash” — akin to swooping for Myles Turner in free agency last summer — may not matter a whole lot to Antetokounmpo at this point. Portis, his teammate for six years, views the Greek Freak’s future as being whatever he wants it to be.
“Ultimately, it’ll come down to Giannis if he really wants to be here or not. He has to make that decision sooner than later,” Portis said. “(It’s better than having) dark clouds always around.”
