Kimi Antonelli was looking to tighten his grip at the top of the drivers’ championship when the Formula One season moved to Barcelona.

The Mercedes driver claimed a fifth straight win in Monaco last time out but could only manage third place in qualifying, with teammate George Russell taking pole position just ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.

With world champion Lando Norris in fourth, it promised to be an engaging race in Montmelo.

Here is how things panned out.

F1 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix results

Lewis Hamilton won the 2026 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix to end his long wait for a first race victory with Ferrari.

The seven-time world champion moved into the lead after a well-time pit stop under Virtual Safety Car conditions following Fernando Alonso’s retirement on lap 41.

Hamilton was able to build a lead on fresh tyres before claiming a 106th career race win and Ferrari’s first in two years.

World championship leader Kimi Antonelli passed George Russell for P2 but immediately encountered a problem and was forced to retire with only four laps remaining. Lando Norris finished third behind Russell, making it an all-British podium for the first time since 1968, with Max Verstappen fourth and Oscar Piastri fifth.

Hamilton had driven superbly all weekend and there was a sense that a Ferrari were building towards a good performance on race day. While things did not go as well for Charles Leclerc, who retired late on due to an apparent power-steering loss, Hamilton displayed all his experience and expertise to make the most of the advantage the team gave him with the smart pit stop.

Ferrari’s first race win since Mexico 2024, combined with Antonelli’s late drama, means the gap at the top of the drivers’ standings is now down to 41 points.

“Thank you so much,” Hamilton said over the team radio. “You’ve helped me achieve this dream and I can’t thank you enough. Thanks for everyone pushing so hard back at home. I’m so proud of you.

“To my family, I love you. To my fans, thank you for continuing to remind me who I am. I couldn’t have done this without you.”

“They’re all special in their own way, but this one is something else,” Hamilton later added of his 106th career grand prix victory.

“I’m happy in my life. I’m in a good place. I love what I do.”
