Soccer world reacts to controversial red card
The footballing world was left is disbelief following referee Joao Pinheiro’s decision to send Embolo off. While most didn’t deny that the Swiss striker dove, the decision to hand him his marching papers due to “mistaken identity” left some feeling aggrieved, with the general sentiment being that the referee was a bit heavy-handed.
The problem with the new ‘mistaken identity’ rule is that it sets a dangerous precedent.
Breel Embolo dived, so if called on the field it’s a second yellow, but that wasn’t the decision.

Some believed Embolo’s theatrics were similar to that of some Argentine players.

Why was Breel Embolo’s red card controversial?
Embolo’s red proved contentious for a handful of reasons. For one, the decision to send the Swiss forward off as opposed to merely nixing Leandro Paredes’ yellow was a dizzying move. Furthermore, the game state appeared to suggest onlookers were slated to witness an eye-catching crescendo. Embolo’s red ensured that wouldn’t be the case.
All told, Embolo’s dismissal changed the match in a marked way. Perhaps Pinheiro was justified in making such a move — in many ways, Embolo left him no choice. Nevertheless, the decision proved an unpopular one around many circles of the internet. Argentina almost certainly won’t mind, though.
