First lady Melania Trump made a rare appearance at a major sporting event Sunday, joining President Donald Trump for the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain.
With two international soccer powers competing for the biggest trophy in the sport, Melania arrived at New York New Jersey Stadium wearing an outfit that appeared to celebrate the host nation without showing support for either finalist.
The first lady paired white pants with a white top and a tan jacket featuring red, white and blue accents. The patriotic color scheme immediately stood out inside the stadium, where Argentine supporters were dressed in sky blue and white while Spain fans filled the stands in red and yellow.
Rather than choosing between Argentina and Spain, Melania’s neutral look kept the emphasis on the United States and its role in hosting the expanded 48-team tournament.

Melania watched the final from a luxury suite alongside President Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, King Felipe VI of Spain and Queen Letizia were among the other prominent political and royal figures in attendance. The Spanish royal couple showed their allegiance by wearing red in support of Spain.

Melania’s outfit offered a noticeable contrast. The Slovenian-born first lady avoided wearing the colors traditionally associated with either national team, instead selecting a look that acknowledged the host country. Her appearance also came nearly one year after she accompanied President Trump to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup final at the same stadium.
The 2026 World Cup was hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, but Sunday’s final took place in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It marked the conclusion of the first men’s World Cup to feature 48 teams. Argentina entered the match attempting to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to win consecutive World Cup titles. Spain was seeking its second championship and first since 2010. FIFA confirmed the championship matchup and final location.

President Trump was expected to join Infantino for the postgame trophy presentation, adding another layer of attention to his appearance.
Trump arrived at the stadium aboard Marine One shortly before kickoff. His arrival and scheduled role in the trophy ceremony ensured that the president remained one of the most visible guests at the event. He became the first sitting U.S. president to attend a men’s World Cup final held on American soil, according to The Guardian.
The final capped a historic tournament for North America and brought together some of the most recognizable names in sports, entertainment and global politics. Yet before Argentina and Spain decided the championship on the field, Melania Trump generated attention of her own. Her white ensemble and red-white-and-blue jacket delivered a clear message: She was attending the World Cup final as a representative of the host nation, not as a supporter of either finalist.
