The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the few teams that didn’t have the luxury of sticking to a set starting five last season, and first-year head coach JJ Redick may be hoping things will be different this season.
Between injuries and inconsistent play, the Lakers never had the luxury of a cohesive starting five last year. Without continuity on their end, it often led to miscommunication and a lack of chemistry. However, with one of the best minds in basketball in Redick, LA should be in a better position moving forward.
Despite rumors suggesting the Lakers would be very active this offseason, general manager Rob Pelinka has opted to relaunch it ahead of next season, outside of the team’s new draft class – the starting lineup in Los Angeles will likely resemble last season’s with potentially one key change.
PG: D’Angelo Russell
Russell could be traded before the season starts, but there’s also a strong possibility he starts the year in Los Angeles. The point guard has shown the ability to create offense with the ball in his hands and be a powerful shooter when called upon. If he makes the Lakers’ opening night roster, he’ll undoubtedly be the starting point guard.
SG: Austin Reaves
Austin Reaves opted out of the 2021 draft to sign with the Lakers rather than be drafted by other interested teams. In turn, the former Oklahoma standout has quickly made a name for himself and has become one of the Lakers’ most reliable and consistent players. Between his ability to handle the ball and play in spots, he will be a big part of the Lakers’ plans next season. He has also developed chemistry with LeBron James and Anthony Davis and is expected to be a part of the starting unit.
SF: LeBron James
LeBron James needs no introduction. The superstar is arguably the best player to ever step on the court and has one of the best understandings of the game. James is a point guard stuck in a power forward’s body and gives the Lakers the ability to utilize different formations. LBJ will be the focal point of the Lakers’ starting lineup next season and beyond.
PF: Rui Hachimura
Rui Hachimura is the biggest question mark on the roster heading into next season. The forward showed flashes of his offensive potential with the Lakers and he’s even shown signs of improvement on defense. There will likely be a battle in training camp between Hachimura and Jared Vanderbilt, and it will ultimately come down to who Redick thinks will fit in best alongside the rest of the starting lineup. However, at this point, the Gonzaga product could offer more upside for LA.
C: Anthony Davis
Anthony Davis is another player who needs no introduction. Not only is Davis an absolute monster on the basket, but the nine-time All-Star is one of the best defensive players in the league. Between his elite basket protection and offensive abilities, Davis will continue to be a vital part of the Lakers’ success, especially if they hope to make a push in the Western Conference.
This team will offer versatility across the board, including an explosive offense and an underrated defense. And while the starting lineup is far from set, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the first time you see this five for the Lakers on opening night.
