Defending Copa America champions Argentina will look to improve on their opener and continue the fight for a second straight crown when they take on two-time winners Chile in the shadow of New York City on Tuesday.
Lionel Messi and the Argentina front line missed many opportunities in the first Group A match against Canada, but managed to secure a hard-fought 2-0 victory.
The Albiceleste will know how important it is to get results regardless of what the performance looks like, and that’s what they achieved to start their campaign, leading the group a third of the way through.
Chile, meanwhile, has a point after drawing goalless with Peru in its first match. It was a disappointing performance for a nation looking to regain prominence, having won back-to-back Copa America titles in 2015 and 2016, but has since faded into obscurity.
Argentina vs Chile prediction, odds
- Lean Money Line: Argentina (-210)
- Best bet: Argentina -1.5 goal handicap (+135)
- Score prediction: Argentina 3-0 Chile
Chile achieved a truly gruesome goalless draw with Peru in their first match, making just one of their 11 shots on goal. They have had more attacking success in friendlies throughout 2024, but have now drawn a blank in four in a row competitive games and five of their last six, a sorry goal record.
If they hope to break down an Argentina defense that held firm with a decent amount of counter-attacking quality from Canada, they need to be much, much better. It’s hard to see that happening.
Meanwhile, Argentina were very strong against Canada and, although they only managed two goals in the opening match, they had many opportunities to make the score even more lopsided. If they remain this dangerous in this game, they will be good for bigger loot.
