A popular harem anime – The Quintessential Quintuplets – is returning with another TV special this year, but viewers think it’s over the top at this point.
If you’re a fan of the harem subgenre, chances are you’ve heard of the Nakano quintuplets and their guardian-turned-love interest Fuutaro. The group debuted in the 2019 romance anime series The Quintessential Quintuplets , charming viewers with a heartfelt story that’s as much about family as it is about love.
The anime then got a sequel in 2021 and a movie in 2022. Throughout the story, we see each Nakano sister find her way in the world and fall in love with Fuutaro along the way. (Warning: Spoilers ahead!)
As in a classic harem, one wondered which sister would ultimately win the protagonist’s heart. The question is finally answered in the anime film, as Fuutaro remembers Yotsuba as the girl he fell in love with as a child. With this memory returned, the two get together and eventually get married.
This is where the film ends, and viewers feel that this is where it should have ended. The meeting between Fuutaro and Yotsuba is the natural conclusion to the story (even if it angered many fans).
But the creators have announced another project in the franchise. A new TV special The Quintessential Quintuplets will hit our screens in September, giving us a glimpse of Fuutaro’s honeymoon with Yotsuba while his sisters tag along (weird!).

“Given the way they’re exploiting the franchise, I have no doubt we’ll get a ‘Quintessential Quintuplets: The Next Generation,'” another quipped.

“You know, at this point, why did Yotsuba win if you’re just going to pretend we have a ‘harem’ route? Just do the harem ending,” commented a third.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a harem anime with a definite winner continue like this before,” added a fourth.
One fan said: “If they want to milk the show for every last drop, then they better ask Shaft to give QQ the Brotherhood treatment.”
The Quintessential Quintuplets: Honeymoon Arc is animated by Bibury Animation Studios and will be released on September 20, 2024.
