Bill Maher is fed up with the right’s obsession with God following the attempted assassination of Donald Trump earlier this week.
Maher, a well-known atheist, said in Real time That Trump is already powerful enough and there is no need to bring religion into this.
“Ever since the bullet that was intended for Donald Trump missed him last Saturday, Republicans have indulged in an orgy of magical thinking,” the HBO host said during Your “New Rule” segment on Friday.
He referenced a post by YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, who referred to Trump as “one of God’s angels,” along with an image shared by Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar that showed God pushing the former president’s bullet away.
Maher added: “Steve Scalise said, ‘There were miracles yesterday and I think the hand of God was there, too.’ Steve was shot, too, but God was having a bad day.”
“America doesn’t need a demigod,” he continued, later adding: “The MAGA nation, because they are religious by nature and given to magical thinking, have been trending toward demigod worship for a while now… But Trump didn’t survive the assassination attempt because of pine intervention. He survived because a virgin couldn’t punch the fattest president since Taft.”
“And again, make no mistake, I’m glad he couldn’t. But Trump is alive because he’s the luckiest son of a bitch who ever lived. His whole life is a series of ‘You’ve got to be kidding me,’” Maher said.
Maher then went on to highlight how lucky Trump has been throughout his life, having inherited a fortune from his father, dodged the consequences of tax fraud and outliving Richard Simmons despite rarely exercising or eating healthily. Maher then returned to the subject of the shooting.
“Look, I fervently hope that no one ever shoots Trump or any candidate, but if someone has to, it’s lucky he’s the world’s biggest loser. And all of this makes religious-minded people see Trump as superhuman now, when in reality, he puts his pants on one leg at a time, after having sex with a porn star.”
Maher concluded: “You want to vote for him? Fine. But don’t pray to him, he’s already decided to be like a god.” He mentioned how Trump recently boasted to the New York Post: “The doctor at the hospital… called it a miracle. I’m not supposed to be here. I’m supposed to be dead.”
“Yes, Dick Cheney too,” Maher replied. “But karma doesn’t cooperate, and there’s no such thing as karma.”
