The Denver Broncos have added a third quarterback to the roster. While the move isn’t necessarily a cause for celebration, the Broncos may not be bringing him aboard simply to help with film study and be a camp arm this preseason.

The Broncos came to terms on Monday with free-agent quarterback Sam Ehlinger. A sixth-round pick in 2021, Ehlinger has spent the first four years of his career with the Indianapolis Colts. He hasn’t done much to evoke excitement in that time, but if you’re familiar with his playing style, Sean Payton could have something up his sleeve.

Ehlinger is an athletic and powerful running quarterback who could make something happen in short-yardage and goal-line situations. He could also become instrumental on two-point conversions and become somewhat of a gimmick player for the Broncos because of the fact that he can throw the football. Who does that sound like? Yes, it sounds exactly like New Orleans Saints quarterback Taysom Hill.

Hill is still with the Saints but may have had a short-lived career if not for the fact that Payton carved out a role in his offense specifically for Hill, a role he continues to relish in. Could the same thing be in the works for Ehlinger? It’s entirely possible.

Ehlinger will take over the No. 3 role on the depth chart that was held by Zach Wilson last season. The Broncos kept all three quarterbacks on their final 53-man roster and held that throughout the season, so this could be quite the opportunity for Ehlinger.

Fans have long wondered when Payton might try to acquire Hill from the Saints. Perhaps he’s made the effort, found out the Saints weren’t interested in dealing him, so he’s gone out and found his own guy.
