Bronny James’ second outing as a pro proved to be a challenging affair, with the Lakers rookie showing the best and worst of his varied skill set.

The 19-year-old guard struggled on offense, scoring just three points on three shots over the course of 29 minutes.
He extended his influence in other ways, though, adding five rebounds, three assists, two steals and three blocks as Los Angeles fell to the Heat, 80-76.
The USC product showcased his defensive prowess on numerous occasions, flying around the perimeter to compete with guards and forwards alike. His screen navigation, foot speed and athleticism shined as he harassed opponents to varying degrees.
The offense, however, was a different story. He was hesitant with the ball in his hands and tended to retreat into the shadows, settling into an off-ball role while players like Dalton Knecht (20 points) and Maxwell Lewis (14 points) expressed themselves.
In short, it was the kind of performance James has become known for. On defense, he can look wonderful. On offense, he can look a little lost, at least compared to his defensive efficiency.

20:52: James and the Lakers gave up an eight-point lead in the final moments of the game. Miami emerges as a worthy winner, 80-76
20:47: Williams finds Sako for the slam! Miami is up two!
20:46: Christopher scores a goal and the Heat come back to tie the score at 76. An 8-0 run to get back into the game!
20:45: Williams escapes James with a big spin move. She then hits a featherweight to the beam. Bottoms. Heat loses by two.
20:41: James deflects a hook shot. Unfortunately for him, the ball falls right into the path of Sako, who dunks on the next possession. Things are getting more complicated…
20:39: James puts together another impressive defensive possession, seamlessly switching before contesting a wide jumper.
20:32: James returns to the court after the Lakers opened up a five-point lead to start the fourth. He was immediately thrown into the fire and landed awkwardly on his leg after cutting off an open shooter. He will remain in the game, however.
End of third quarter: Heat 59, Lakers 58
20:21: Bronny was removed from the match after a fairly fruitful period in defence.
20:17: Keshad Johnson has fueled Miami’s comeback, climbing over the redwoods to deliver the ball into the hoop. He has scored 19 points and seven rebounds so far. Fueled by his latest exploits, the Heat have cut Los Angeles’ lead to just two.
20:15 hours: James continues to show his defensive prowess, even against smaller players. He just prevented 6-foot-2 Neal Sako from getting under the rim. Remember, Bronny is “only” 6-foot-2.
20:09: Knecht drives to the basket for a two-handed dunk. He has scored a game-high 18 points so far.
20:08: James tried to take advantage of Pullin’s step-back and fell to the canvas. The ball eventually landed in the basket after Pullin’s shot went wide.
20:06 hours: Pullin can’t get past James in this matchup. The young man from Miami has been meeting his matchup opponent James at every turn.
20:04 hours: James notched his third assist of the game, with Kahse serving as the benefactor. The former St. Mary’s star drained a 3-pointer from the wing, opening up a double-digit lead for the Lakers in the process.
20:03 hours: Another impressive pass from James, who steals the ball from his opposing marker. The ball falls safely into the hands of Lewis, who finishes with aplomb into the hoop.
End of second quarter: Lakers 40, Heat 36
19:49: Los Angeles has put together a 9-0 run. James has also been a prominent player, covering a lot of ground on defense and offering subtle (if limited) contributions with the ball in his hands. Knecht has been the big star, finding his scoring groove at all three levels.
19:47: James slides to the cup after a pair of crossover passes. His next floater attempt was a bit erratic, however, and hit the rim hard. James dug deep, though, and cleared his miss with a touch that allowed Knecht to be completely open. The former SEC Player of the Year did the rest, hitting a three-pointer that raised his point total to 12 on the day.
19:46: James is 1 for 2 from the free throw line.
19:45: James makes a solid back cut before attempting a layup through contact. His attempt misses the target, but heads to the free throw line.
19:44: James’ three-point attempt from the wing goes wide. A quality play from the former USC point guard.
19:42: James strips the ball from Bryson Warren, taking it to the floor before passing the ball to Florida product Castleton, who was fouled trying to finish the fast break.

19:41: James attempts a three-pointer, but steps off the sideline before taking the shot.
19:39: Another impressive defensive play from James, who deflects Williams’ pass. Lewis eventually stops the deflected attempt, throwing a high pass to Castleton to cut Miami’s lead.
19:36: James tips Zyon Pullin to pave the way for Maxwell Lewis to go to the free throw line. Just like that, Los Angeles takes the lead: the Lakers have scored seven unanswered points.
19:34: James returns to the floor and immediately records a turnover after attempting to lob a ball to Colin Castleton.
19:32: The Heat start the second on a 10-0 run, fueled by former first-rounder Josh Christopher. James hasn’t been on the court for any time, for what it’s worth.
End of first quarter: Lakers 21, Heat 21
19:23: It hasn’t been the most prolific display from James today. The same can’t be said for Knecht, who is 2-for-3 on three-pointers and already has 10 points in this game.
19:17: Alondes Williams was in full force today. The Wake Forest product stepped up and consistently found the key in his shot attempts. He scored eight points in seven minutes and is bringing the Heat a little closer to their California opponent.
19:16: James falls to the ground and records his first turnover of the game. He will walk to the bench after losing the ball.
19:15: James had a lot of off-ball play early on.
19:11: James did some good screen driving early on. Defense is his specialty, after all. However, he was sidelined when Bryson Warren hit a mid-range jumper over his outstretched hand.
19:08: James hits a reverse layup as he opens his scoring day with a basket in transition.
