The Chicago Bulls are stuck in an organizational crisis.
Chicago is trying to rebrand itself as an exciting city to rebuild, but it hasn’t quite put together the deals needed to make such a project work.
Most notably, Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucević are still on the roster, simply because Bulls executive Artūras Karnišovas and general manager Marc Eversley have failed in their repeated attempts to trade both players.
Trading LaVine may be a lost cause, but Vucević offers value that remains attractive to some teams; particularly, contenders looking to employ Vucević as a positive replacement at center.
The days of Vucević being considered a starting center on a championship team are over; his defense is far too lacking for that role. Vucević can still stretch the floor and grab rebounds, though, and he’s far from old at 33.
A team like the Miami Heat would be interested in Vucević, based on how they’ve used a player like Kevin Love over the past two seasons.
Miami’s defense is their strong suit, but the Heat have been stagnant offensively at times since the Jimmy Butler-Bam Adebayo era. Vucević is a player who comes in and takes advantage of the opportunities created by the attention that Butler, Adebayo and Tyler Herro demand.
The Bulls are at a point where they are willing to give up Vucević’s contract (2 years/$40 million) to anyone who can offer in exchange for expiring contracts. That’s exactly what Chicago would do in the case of a Vucević/Miami deal.
A Vucević-for-Duncan Robinson trade would make sense financially, with rookie Pelle Larsson’s small contract combined with Robinson’s.
The trade would help Chicago free up salary space a year early, as Robinson’s expiring $19.4 million contract is better than Vucević’s two-year situation.
For what it’s worth, Robinson would be a fun addition to what should be a tank-fest in 2024-25 for the Bulls. He could shoot a ton of three-pointers without bothering any of Chicago’s developing players, and his negative defense would help contribute to the tank.
It’s a deal that would benefit both franchises.
