The three-point line’s introduction ahead of the 1979-80 NBA season proved a revolutionary addition in the sport’s history.
In the 45 years since its debut, the league has seen more than a few marksmen grace the floor. From Larry Bird and Chuck Person to Ray Allen and Reggie Miller to Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, the sport’s record books are forever altered as a result of the three-point revolution.
Curry and Thompson are the gold standard for shooting excellence. In 2023, the duo powered the Warriors’ frenzied attack, a unit which produced more triples than any other side in history.
But records are meant to be broken. Soon enough, there would be a bigger and badder team than Golden State, one which would flood the basket with a barrage of three-pointers at a rate even higher than Curry, Thompson and the rest of their then-teammates.

As it turned out, that team would take the floor just two years later. The 2024-25 Celtics possess more than a few gunslingers on their roster. This season, they proved they have the production to match such a title, making NBA history for their antics from beyond the arc in the process.

Celtics break NBA three-point record
Boston’s roster is littered with talented shooters. Opposing teams have taken notice, too; the Celtics set the record for three-pointers made in a single campaign, surpassing the Warriors’ high-water mark of 1,363 on Friday night.
They accomplished the feat in typical Boston fashion, serving up another efficient display from beyond the arc. Joe Mazzulla’s side only needed eight threes to break Golden State’s glass ceiling. It took them just two quarters to secure the feat. Payton Pritchard proved the star man, sinking a shot from the right wing to make NBA history. The Oregon alum seemed a fitting player to nab the accomplishment; Pritchard has the single-season record for most threes coming off the bench, after all.
