A critical juncture in Arsenal’s season arrives as the Gunners jet to Eindhoven to visit PSV in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 matchup.

With the Premier League title race slipping away and Mikel Arteta’s side showing significant cracks, the Champions League remains their last real chance for tangible success in the campaign.

The Gunners are out of both domestic English cup competitions and are staring at a 13-point gap between their second-place position in the Premier League table and leaders Liverpool. With significant injuries still lingering in the attacking ranks, they have stagnated through the latter half of the season and are needing a spark.

That’s what makes this test against PSV so pivotal: a good road performance in European play could provide a beacon of hope amidst a campaign beginning to grow stale. That is far from a certainty, though.

Unlike Arsenal, PSV have managed to push through their litany of injury absences and are seeking to make the most of this season. The Dutch side has troubled numerous big clubs in the Champions League already, taking points off both Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain in the league phase before stunning Juventus in the playoff stage.

PSV vs. Arsenal prediction, odds

Jugo Mobile football betting expert Kyle Bonn shares his best bets, props, and longshot fliers for some of the biggest matches in the sport each week. Since the start of 2024, he has correctly predicted 54.8% of 398 match outcomes via his 3-way moneyline leans for a total profit of 32.3 units.

A matchup against a confidence-laden PSV is exactly what Arsenal would have hoped to avoid, as the Dutch side are everything Arsenal fear.

PSV are capable of defending against top European sides but also do not fear a shootout with ‘big five’ clubs. Back in October, they managed to hang on for dear life and snatch a 1-1 draw at PSG, before closing out the league phase with a critical victory over Liverpool, who had little themselves to play for.

Even while their league form has dipped under the stress of key absences as a few in-form attackers have suffered injuries, they have managed to trouble European challengers. Just ask Juventus, who were unable to stifle the Dutch side even as Thiago Motta tried desperately to use his negative tactics to snuff out the match.

Arsenal may manage a comeback at home in the second leg, but don’t count out PSV from making life incredibly difficult for the Premier League giants early on.

Both sides have suffered significant injuries on the attacking front this season and have suffered because of it.

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka remains a few weeks from a return, as does Gabriel Martinelli, while Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz are out for months. The Gunners, as a result, have been blanked in three of their past four matches, only managing to score against relegation-threatened Leicester City in a match in which they still only created a mediocre amount of quality chances.

For PSV, the loss of Malik Tillman and Ricardo Pepi have proven a troubling issue, as aging Ivan Perisic and Luuk de Jong cannot carry the load on their own. Given this, and the fact that Arsenal will likely be happy to come away with the scoreline reasonably low and not risk disaster before returning home for the second leg, a cagey match is a high-probability outcome.
