The Los Angeles Chargers have added a new quarterback to the roster, agreeing to terms with No. 3 overall draft pick Trey Lance. The deal is reportedly for one year and could be worth up to $6.2 million.
Lance, who was taken high in the 2021 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, who traded up to get him, has never gotten out of the starting blocks in the league. After spending the past two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys as the team’s third-string quarterback, he now comes to Los Angeles looking for a fresh start.
Justin Herbert is entrenched as the Chargers’ starter, but Lance will compete with Taylor Heinicke for the primary backup job.
After a great college career at North Dakota State, Lance was lauded as the next big thing coming into the NFL. But that has never materialized as he was beaten out by Brock Purdy, the last pick in the 2022 draft, and then traded to the Cowboys for a fourth-round pick.
For his career, Lance has completed 56.6 percent of his passes for 1,063 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions. He has rushed for another 276 yards and a touchdown across 12 games, with five being starts.

It will be interesting to see how Chargers fans react to this signing, but most of them will likely feel much like this:

Lance has a long way to go to prove he even belongs on an NFL roster, but he will get a new start with Jim Harbaugh in Greg Roman’s offense. He is still only 24 years (25 in May) and could still have some untapped potential.
Lance will replace Easton Stick as the Chargers’ No. 3 option. Interestingly, he replaced Stick at North Dakota State once Stick’s playing career there was over.
