Luka Doncic already has the ball and the offense built around him on the Los Angeles Lakers. The question heading into this offseason is whether the Lakers can put a co-star next to him worthy of a legitimate title run.
According to a speculated blockbuster trade proposal, the answer could be walking out of the Milwaukee Bucks and the clock on making it happen is ticking fast as Giannis Antetokounmpo is set to walk in free agency after the 2026–27 season.
Lakers linked to blockbuster sign-and-trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo
Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus proposed a sign-and-trade scenario sending Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Lakers in exchange for Austin Reaves, Jarred Vanderbilt, Jake LaRavia, Dalton Knecht, Nick Smith Jr., an unprotected 2031 first-round pick, and a top-5 protected 2032 first-round swap.
The deal, which includes a four-year, $172 million contract for Reaves, aims to pair Antetokounmpo with Doncic in Los Angeles. “The reasoning is simple: Los Angeles adds one of the five best players on the planet to pair with Luka Doncic,” Pincus wrote.
The Bucks have six weeks to clarify Antetokounmpo’s future before his October 1 extension window opens. If he refuses to extend his contract, Milwaukee must trade him before he becomes a free agent. Their best window to trade him is during the NBA Draft in June or free agency in July.
Giannis Antetokounmpo holds veto power
However, they don’t have as much power here as people think. Even though Giannis Antetokounmpo doesn’t have an official “no-trade” clause in his contract, he still controls where he goes. If the trade him to a team that he dislikes, he can leave them for nothing when his contract ends. That threat stops unwanted trades instantly.
If he forces his way to the Lakers, Milwaukee actually gets a great return. Austin Reaves was playing like an All-Star before hurting his calf, including a massive 51-point game against Sacramento in October. Paired with draft picks and young players, this return allows Milwaukee to retool rather than rebuild completely.
But the biggest question left is what happens to LeBron James. The Lakers simply cannot afford to keep him at $50 million if Giannis is on the books. To make the math work around Luka and Giannis, the front office basically has to choose a completely new era.
If they choose the new path, a Doncic-Antetokounmpo duo gives them a premier perimeter passer and an unstoppable paint beast. It would instantly become the most famous lineup in basketball.
