The Denver Broncos capped off an impressive preseason with a 38-12 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. If there was a downside to the win, it was cornerback Damarri Mathis getting ejected on the team’s first defensive series.
It appears that Mathis was run over during the game and was unable to put any weight on his leg while he was being loaded onto the cart. He was holding his ankle and appeared to be in a great deal of pain. However, after the game, X-rays came back negative.

Although he will have to undergo an MRI on Monday to confirm that he has no serious damage, this is good news for the team. Although Mathis appears to have lost out to Riley Moss in the competition for the team’s starting cornerback spot against Pat Surtain II, he should still fit into the team’s plans this season.
Damarri Mathis will remain on the Broncos’ 53-man roster
Mathis was removed from the starting lineup, a spot he lost through the 2023 season, but he remains an athletic young defenseman with promising upside who can also contribute on special teams.
Sean Payton said CB Damarri Mathis’ imaging was promising. He didn’t think it was a serious injury, but didn’t provide any additional information in terms of timing/IR decision/etc.

Mathis was selected in the fourth round in 2022 and is just 25 years old. He has 100 tackles and eight pass deflections in his career. The Broncos had an incredibly successful preseason in which they stayed relatively healthy, but this Mathis injury threatened to put a damper on that.
Fortunately, it seems like everything will be fine.
