The launch of the iPad Pro M4 is a big deal for Apple. The launch of a new chip is exciting enough, but the M4 promises to revolutionize the way Apple products work. The chip not only offers incredible performance and incredible battery life, but also represents Apple’s biggest push into AI processing yet.
Naturally, some of you will be hoping that these chips appear in the Mac, rather than the iPad. While we expect certain devices to get the M4 chip later this year, like the MacBook Pro or Mac mini, you might not want to hold your breath for an M4 version of the Mac Studio or Mac Pro.
According to Mark Gurman in Bloomberg, Apple is not likely to release a new version of any of the desktop machines this year. We may see them as early as mid-2025, assuming everything goes as planned, but not before. That means the M2-powered machines, which debuted at WWDC in 2023, will go at least two years without an update.
The good news is that Gurman believes the only other Mac that won’t receive an M4 update this year is the MacBook Air. This isn’t a big surprise, as the MacBook Air M3 has only been available for a few months and many people would be upset if Apple updated it too quickly.
But this does mean that the MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, and possibly even the iMac could be available with an M4 chip before the end of the year. It’s unclear when these will be released, but Gurman added that we shouldn’t see any new Mac hardware at WWDC 2024.
This isn’t very surprising, as WWDC is a software-focused event for developers. While there have been hardware announcements during the keynote in the past, they are generally quite rare. This year should be no exception, and at most we should expect hardware conversations to focus on the Apple Vision Pro headphones. Presumably any appearance would hype up the rumored international launch, as opposed to new hardware announcements.
The rest of the conference will focus on upcoming updates to Apple devices. iOS 18 will be the biggest announcement given Apple’s focus on AI, and we’ll also hear about iPadOS 18, macOS 15, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2.
