Los Angeles Lakers rookie Bronny James has had a disappointing start to his NBA career, especially considering the attention on him.
The NBA Summer League is meant for young players to develop, not to judge their future, but that doesn’t stop everyone from doing it. UW Green Bay Division 1 basketball coach Doug Gottlieb recently gave his thoughts on the possibility of James being a starter on his team.
“He would compete for a starting spot, but while I like the way he moves the ball and defends, he wouldn’t be my target,” Gottlieb wrote. “And my forwards are bigger and without seeing him with us, I think it would be tough for him to start, honestly.”

While there’s no denying James’ lackluster performance as a freshman with the USC Trojans, it’s a bit of a stretch to say that an NBA talent wouldn’t be a starter on a mid-level team. In his three Summer League appearances, the 6-foot-2 shooting guard has recorded 15 points on 6-of-26 shooting from the field. On the other hand, James has been involved in all aspects of the game, most notably on the defensive end.
