It’s no secret the NBA wants to expand. For years, NBA expansion rumors have filled the news cycles.
In addition to potentially getting involved with a European-based league, the NBA might consider adding two more teams to the mix in the US.
For the most part, fans and players haven’t pushed back on the idea. In fact, most seem open and excited about the idea of two new teams popping up.
When it comes to the Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green, though, he’s against it. Not for the business reasons, but more for the reality of the game and what could happen.
Draymond Green Drops a Statement on NBA Expansion
“For the game, I’m not sure it’s great. Talk expansion draft,” Green said on his podcast.
“Vegas and Seattle are two teams that I think would be able to acquire free agents to come there after the expansion draft. I think these teams will thrive in these places. I just really worry that there’s not enough talent to add 30 more spots. I mean, you look at some of these teams around the NBA and you don’t know half the guys name who take the NBA floor. I just don’t remember being that way when I was growing up. And so I just think the talent pool is going to get watered down more and more from a basketball standpoint and it already hasn’t been that great.”
Not everybody would agree with that sentiment. Oftentimes, players land on a roster temporarily, whether it’s through a 10-day or a two-way getting some burn outside of the G League, the standouts often cause fans to utter quotes that suggest there’s too much talent in the NBA.
The climate of the game is in an odd spot, considering all of the tanking going on. As teams eye single players coming out of the NCAA or entering the draft from overseas, some front offices aren’t genuinely searching for winning moves. They just need bodies to play the game and help them increase their odds of landing a favorable pick in the lottery.
Adding two more teams could bring on a couple of competitive rosters. Or, it could create even more tanking. In Green’s eyes, the game would be in a tough spot.
