Golden State Warriors power forward Draymond Green has defended some of the best offensive players in NBA history. He knows his stuff about defense and says Carmelo Anthony was harder to defend than Jayson Tatum.
“What Melo did differently than everyone else was the pressure he put on the basket.” Green said on the Podcast Club 520“I actually told JT before: Go for the Cup. Sometimes you settle for too much. I told him that after we beat him in the championship. I just want you to know that our whole thing was based on you being willing to settle for that.”
Anthony was a more resilient cover than the Celtics star because, unlike Anthony, Tatum keeps the defense out of harm’s way.
“I had to defend Melo. He caught the ball in the middle of the post, faced it, put his head down, went to the basket, hit me, threw the ball and missed his shot. It could have been a foul, but it was close. He created all the contact. He looked at the referee like he was calling a foul,” Green said.
Anthony is the tenth top scorer in NBA history. While Tatum is a talented player, he still has a long way to go to catch Anthony on the all-time scoring leaderboard. Players have a knack for settling for jump shots in the way modern basketball is played, and Tatum could take his game to an even more elite level by attacking like Anthony did when he dominated the league.
