The comedian sat down for an interview with from today Al Roker this morning, where he talked about working alongside his daughter on Beverly Hills Police: Axel F.
“She’s the one who arrests me,” he said. “In the other scene in the movie, when I’m arrested, my son-in-law hits me in the neck with a stun gun.”
Murphy continued: “It was right after they got married. He was on set, shooting my neck. I thought, ‘This is surreal.'”
The actor originated the role of Axel Foley, a Detroit detective who moves to Southern California to solve the murder of his childhood friend, when the former Beverly Hills Police came out in 1984. He reprized the role in 1987 Beverly Hills Police II and 1994 Beverly Hills Police III.
Now, exactly 30 years after the release of the most recent film, Murphy is gearing up for the release of the franchise’s fourth installment. The only difference?
“I felt like an old man,” he told Roker. “I did Beverly Hills Police when I was 21 years old and now I am 63.”
Murphy said he would “prefer not” to do any of his own stunts these days, noting that he even refused to run down a flight of stairs with “urgency.”
“I thought, ‘I’m not doing any action.’ Don’t call me unless you offer me the same kind of shit you’d offer Morgan Freeman,’” she said.

Murphy will meet with OGBeverly Hills Policestarring Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser and Bronson Pinchot, as well as newcomers Kevin Bacon, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Taylor Paige for Beverly Hills Police: Axel F, which follows Axel as he works to uncover a conspiracy after his daughter’s life is threatened.
“Axel is an everyman. He’s not a superhero or a super cop,” Murphy said. “He is the man who rises to the occasion. I think that’s why people like him and, more than anything, he’s funny.”
