It’s been a week since The Umbrella Academy The series surprised fans with an emotional and dramatic finale that (major spoiler alert) showed all the main characters sacrificing themselves for the greater good. As one character, Five (played by Aidan Gallagher), puts it, it’s worse than if they committed suicide — they erased themselves from existence in the first place. It was a bold way to end the four-season series, which first aired on Netflix in 2019. Unsurprisingly, the ending rankled some fans.
In a recent interview with Jugo Mobile, star Elliot Page said that, for him, the ending wasn’t all that shocking. “When I first read it, of course, I was shocked… I mean, I guess I wasn’t surprised,” he said when asked about his initial reaction to the series finale. “The ending actually made sense to me.”
As for fans’ reactions online, Page said he’s had plenty of practice avoiding angry people online. “I haven’t really seen the fan reactions,” Page said in response to whether he’s seen the fan reactions. “I’m not an Internet person. To be honest, that’s something that I’ve kind of cut out of my life these last few years. So I don’t always necessarily engage with that stuff, for reasons you can probably imagine.”
The Oscar-nominated actor known forJunocame out as trans on social media in 2020. Shortly after Page’s announcement, her character in The Umbrella AcademyViktor, who also came out as trans, is also out. The series, which was adapted from the comic book series of the same name by writer Gerard Way and illustrator Gabriel Bá, tells the story of adopted siblings with superpowers who battle evil forces and various impending apocalypses.
Time travel alters reality, and in season four, the brothers realize the only way to restore the timeline is to erase themselves from existence. For Page, the end of his character was overshadowed by the series finale for the cast and crew.
“It’s more of a general feeling that the show is ending,” she said. “I’ve never been on a show for so long or done a job for so long. Just being in Los Angeles, with all the press there and reflecting on the show as a whole… it was definitely sad to say goodbye.”
