The knockout rounds of Euro 2024 are where teams start to dream of glory.
From here on out we’re in a single-elimination knockout stage, where fans believe anything can happen. That’s why teams don’t care how to get there. They just want to get there.
Some paths will be easier than others in the playoffs, depending on which teams qualify and which side of the bracket each team finishes on. The round of 16 matchups are all pre-determined, and teams are ranked based on their results in their respective groups (group winner, group runner-up, or one of the best third-place finishers in the group).

Euro 2024 round of 16 schedule
The matchups in the round of 16 were predetermined and the draw was completed as each team took first or second place in their respective groups. The four best third-place finishers have also qualified for the first knockout round.

Teams in the round of 16 and the Euro 2024 draw
The Euro Cup draw is pided into two halves. And each will produce a finalist. The category was formed as a result of group stage action, which concluded on June 26.

So far, only one team has qualified for the first half of the round of 16, from which a lucky finalist will emerge:
- Germany
The other half of the group will produce the other finalist. No one has yet secured a spot on this list.
How does the round of 16 of Euro 2024 work?
The round of 16 is the start of what is commonly known as the knockout rounds, because every match is a direct elimination match from now on.
There are no points earned. There are no classifications. There is simply a winner and a loser.
What happens if the knockout matches end in a tie?
There must be a winner that day for each round of 16 match and for the following knockout matches (quarterfinals, semi-finals, final). So, if the teams are tied after 90 minutes of regulation, the match goes into a 30-minute overtime period.
If the tie remains after those 30 minutes of extra time, then a penalty shootout will determine the team that advances to the quarterfinals.
The round of 16 pairings are set in advance. The teams that finish first in the group stage face teams that are runners-up to the best third places in their respective groups.
How the teams advance in Euro 2024
There are 24 teams that reach the Euro Cup, after passing qualifying matches in their respective regions.
Group stage
Once they reach the tournament, the first obstacle that awaits them is the group stage. In 2024, the 24 teams were pided into six groups of four teams each.
The group stage consists of the typical round-robin game, with each team playing the other three once. Three points are awarded for each victory in the group stage, one for a draw and none for a defeat. If the teams are tied on points, goal difference and then goals represent the first tiebreakers.
The top two finishers in each group advance to the knockout phase, as do the four best third-place finishers. Those teams are placed in a predetermined group based on their position in the group starting in the round of 16.
Elimination rounds
From the round of 16 to the final, each match is single elimination. Teams advance from the round of 16 to the quarterfinals, then to the semifinals, and finally to the final.
As explained above, if the teams are tied at the end of 90 minutes of regulation, the teams play 30 minutes of extra time followed by a penalty shootout, if necessary.
