Fans of the series will remember that the first season ended with Jax recovering from Damon’s traumatic death, the affair, her kidnapping, and Brayden Miller’s trial. The final scene of the finale also showed her answering a call from her friend Shanelle Tucker (Shannon Kane), who had bruises on her face. Her husband, Jamarion, was bleeding on the floor behind her, and after hearing Shanelle on the other end of the line, Jax said, “Oh, shit.”

Morris Chestnut is becoming one of Reasonable doubtThe main men of

That ambitious defense attorney Jax brings in to lead the case? His name is Corey Cash, he’s played by the great Morris Chestnut, and he’s about to revolutionize the show.

“In terms of the story, Corey’s character comes into the office, into the firm. And that in itself, I mean, we just know something’s going to happen, because we know where we left off with Jax dealing with this trauma,” Corinealdi told TCA members. “Here we are, in Season 2, and it’s just the mental toll of that. Her trying to find herself again as a result of everything that’s happened. With Corey coming in, it’s automatically going to create some drama for her, because she’s not used to taking a backseat or any kind of seat other than the front seat. So, it’s going to create some drama in the office, and it’s going to be very difficult for Jax to try to navigate the waters knowing that she’s not 1,000 percent back. She’s not 1,000 percent. She’s not completely herself.”

“Let me tell you something. When they announced that Morris was coming, I got messages like, ‘Hey, you should get a new Ring camera for the house,’” Freeman added with a laugh. “Morris, whenever he comes on board a production, he just adds to the value of the production, especially from a cast and crew perspective. He brings a level of professionalism and class that makes you think, ‘Okay. This guy is a perfect fit.’ And I think for us as a team of creators … to have someone come on board and seamlessly join the crew is a huge blessing.”

Jax and Lewis are trying to save their marriage

There may be an extremely handsome new man in town, but Jax and Lewis are still trying to save their marriage in Season 2, and they’ve started going to couples therapy.

“First and foremost, you have to be human. Yes, it’s a TV show, but what are the human things? In what ways, in the human sense, do you have to take care of yourself? And we address that this season in a lot of different ways,” Wilmore explained. “One of the keys is the relationship. We see them in therapy this season. A really important part of self-care is group care, you know, and taking care of your partner and that kind of thing. It’s a big lesson for Jax and for Lewis this season.”

“I think being able to play a husband who doesn’t have it all figured out, who is the partner to such a dynamic and powerful woman who is out in the world doing incredible things, it’s like, okay, how do you reconcile your perception of what it’s like to be a man sitting in this situation with the reality of what it takes for him to move forward at the pace that he can?” Freeman said. “I think Lewis’ journey this year is a lot about making sense of the world in a way that’s honest and also trying to create some sense of common ground to build a future out of… You’re lied to, and everything around you was paradise, but you realize it was all a lie. So when you wake up in that paradise, how do you figure out how to move forward? And it’s just the beginning of, ‘Who am I in this world? Who am I as a husband? Who am I as a father?’”

Jax’s journey to mental health and self-care

In addition to Jax and Lewis’ joint efforts to repair their relationship, Jax will attempt to prioritize his own mental health and self-care in Season 2. “…Even medication is a part of it, by the way. And mental health, which we’re really happy to have on this show because we feel like a lot of times, mental health, especially in the Black community, isn’t talked about as much,” Wilmore said. “So, we wanted to address that head-on in this, and [Jax is] “We also deal with all those issues.”

“Jax gives herself permission to say no, she gives herself grace. It’s okay to take a step back. Now, because she’s Jax, she may not take a step back, but she’s giving herself the opportunity to do so, and that’s a very different thing. This is new territory, you know?” Corinealdi explained. “Jax is very active all the time, ready to go. And we find her in a very different position in this second season. So part of that self-care is giving herself grace to not be firing on all cylinders. It’s okay to take a step back for a moment. But then she’s grappling with what that means. What does that mean? If I’m in the back, who’s in the front?”

Melissa Ponzio and more will join the cast as well

As Deadline reported Earlier this month, several stars besides Morris will join Reasonable doubt Season 2, including Chicago FireMelissa Ponzio from ‘TV Series’ as Lucy Wargo, a new district attorney who comes to Los Angeles from Las Vegas. When asked about their complex dynamic, Corinealdi said, “She’s so powerful, she represents so many different things. And they can really play off each other as adversaries and then you can see them maybe come out on top, you know? It’s really one of the things that makes the show what it is, because it’s unexpected. It’s unexpected. We see what Jax is like in this male-dominated world, and she can handle herself so well. But to have a female adversary who comes in with some of that same energy is like, ‘Well, wait a minute,’ while she’s at this point where she’s not completely herself. So, she really has to pull herself together to get into the fight, to do the work that needs to be done, but she’s still struggling inside.”

In addition to Morris and Ponzio, Deadline reported that Essence Atkins will play domestic violence expert Dr. Brandy Michaels, Vaughn W. Hebron will join as NFL player Adrian Hunter, and Kandi Burruss will reprise the role of Eboni Phillips, the mother of JT’s daughter Natasha.

Tim and Angela Fans, get ready for season 2

New characters may join Reasonable doubt Season 2, but rest assured that Season 1 favorites Daniel (Tim Jo) and Krystal (Angela Grovey) will be back.

“There will be a lot of changes. We have Corey Cash in the office, so that changes the dynamic between us and Jax,” Jo told TCA members. “I think Angela and I have had a lot of fun this season and we’re excited for you to see our relationship.”

“Krystal is forced to be a little bit vulnerable this season,” Grovey added. “There’s something, a desire that you find out that she’s wanted to do and she has to lean on some people. And if you know my character, she doesn’t like asking for help and being vulnerable. So there are some connections that are created out of necessity.”
