After an utterly dominant campaign last year, Max Verstappen picked up where he left off with victory in Bahrain to kick off the 2024 Formula 1 season.
Jeddah then saw Verstappen qualify on pole for the Saudi Grand Prix and dominated from start to finish despite Lando Norris briefly leading behind a safety car. Sergio Perez took second after an early battle with Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari.
But in Melbourne things changed: Verstappen and Hamilton retired early. Sainz won and took the Ferrari one-two alongside Charles Leclerc. Norris completed the podium.
However, Verstappen returned to the top step of the podium in Japan, winning from pole for the 30th time in his career, before taking back-to-back victories in China.
Seeking a third consecutive victory of the season, Verstappen was unable to continue his dominance as he was beaten by Norris in Miami, where the McLaren driver won his first Formula 1 race of his career. Then, in Monaco, Charles Leclerc finally tasted victory on home soil, closing the gap at the top of the drivers’ standings.
Verstappen returned to winning ways in Canada, while Mercedes also recorded positive signs at that race, claiming their first podium of the year.
The Dutchman looked set for another victory but a late collision with Norris saw George Russell win his first race of the season and the second of his F1 career.
Lewis Hamilton then won the Silverstone Grand Prix ahead of Verstappen and Norris in mixed conditions for his first victory since the penultimate race of the 2021 season.
Oscar Piastri has become the new winner of an F1 race, taking his first victory in Hungary, finishing ahead of his team-mate in controversial circumstances.
Hamilton took his second win of the season after teammate Russell was disqualified in Belgium.
After the summer break, it was Norris who caused a sensation by beating Verstappen by a considerable margin in the Dutch Grand Prix.
