Recreated in 2022 to pit the Copa America and Euro champions against one another in a winner-take-all match, the Finalissima has gained rapid notoriety as one of the most coveted trophies in international football.
Contested by the champions of those federations considered the most dominant, the trophy is currently held by Argentina, who won the competition in 2022 by defeating Italy, foreshadowing their eventual victory later that year in the FIFA World Cup.
The Albiceleste are hoping to defend that title after winning the latest Copa America crown, this time against reigning European champions Spain. The game is due to be held in March in Qatar.
Unfortunately, geopolitical turmoil has threatened the viability of that match after military action in the Middle East, initially by the United States and Israel.
Why has Qatar suspended all sport?
On March 1, Qatar announced that all sporting events in the country have been suspended until further notice. This included football, with the Qatar Football Association (QFA) indicating that “the QFA will announce the resumption of the championships on a later date.”
The announcement came following an Iranian missile and drone strike on Doha, which was reportedly intercepted by Qatar air defenses, although debris is said to have injured 16 individuals in the city.
Iran’s retaliatory strike came shortly after “massive” U.S. and Israeli military action in Tehran, which led to the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as confirmed by Iranian state media.
U.S. president Donald Trump has described the ongoing USA-led engagement as “major combat operations”.
Will the Finalissima go ahead?
With the Finalissima not scheduled to take place until March 27, there is still plenty of time for tensions to cool and Qatar to resume sporting events in the country.
However, it’s impossible to know at this point how things will play out and whether the two participants will feel comfortable traveling to Doha for the match.
March international games scheduled in Qatar
The Finalissima is far from the only match in Qatar scheduled to take place during the March international break, as it plays headline to what has been dubbed the Qatar Football Festival 2026.
As part of the event, multiple international matches are due to be held in the country and thus are at threat of postponement or cancellation due to the hostilities.
Spain and Argentina will both take part in international friendlies following the Finalissima, while Serbia, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia will all travel to the country for matches alongside the hosts.
