While it may seem like a downtime in the NBA, teams have been making adjustments to their respective rosters.
In addition to welcoming two participants to the 2024 Summer League, the Orlando Magic sign two-time NBA Slam Dunk Champion and G League MVP.
“The Orlando Magic have signed free agents Mac McClung, Javonte Smart and Ethan Thompson,” president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman announced Thursday. “Per team policy, terms of the contracts are not being disclosed.”
Last year, McClung played for the Osceola Magic in the NBA G League and had his most prolific season as a professional. He averaged 25.7 points per game on 50.7 percent field goal percentage and 39.6 percent from three-point range. As a result, McClung won the G League MVP award at the end of the season.
Since going undrafted in 2021, McClung has been battling for a full-time NBA job. He’s earned multiple 10-day and two-way contracts but hasn’t been able to convince a franchise to take a leap of faith on him. He’s a fearless, 6-foot-2 guard with plenty of flexibility in his game. Once he’s executing clean left-to-right crossovers on the perimeter, he lets his instincts take over and guide him to the basket. When he finally gets there, he flashes his remarkable 4-foot-3 vertical leap.
That incredible athleticism was on display at the last two NBA Slam Dunk Competitions, with McClung becoming the first G League player to earn an invite. Even more impressive, McClung took home the trophy each time, making it possible for a non-NBA player to make a splash at the event.
McClung has only appeared in four NBA games so far, but that number could increase during the 2024-25 season.
