Manchester United face an old-school Second Round EFL Cup trip to League Two side Grimsby Town on August 27.

It’s the biggest mismatch at this stage of the competition as the Premier League side take on a fourth-tier team at Blundell Park.

Ruben Amorim’s team are yet to win a top-flight game so far this season after losing at home to Arsenal on the opening weekend of the campaign.

The Red Devils looked sharp on the road at Fulham, but they had to settle for a draw in the end, as Emile Smith-Rowe denied Amorim victory at over the weekend.

Amorim has only played one EFL Cup game since joining United in November 2024 which ended in a 4-3 quarterfinal defeat to Tottenham.

Hosts Grimsby are unbeaten in the first five games of their league season, with three wins and two draws for David Artell’s team, and they dispatched fellow League Two side Shrewsbury Town in the previous round.

Grimsby vs. Man United lineups: Starting XI, team news, injury latest

Artell will be aiming for a possible giant killing in this game and he will go with the strongest team possible against Amorim superstar visitors.

Irish forward Jaze Kabia is the name to look out for after netting four goals in six games already this season with former Chelsea academy star George McEachran in midfield.

Grimsby starting XI (4-5-1, right to left): Pym (GK) — Rodgers, Warren, McJannet, Staunton — Amaluzor, McEachran, Turi, Khouri, Burns — Kabia.

Amorim will follow the pattern of other Premier League managers and make major rotations in between top-flight games with Burnley on the horizon on August 30.

Andre Onana has not featured in the opening two games of 2025/26, and could rotate in to start, with Joshua Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo also amongst a clutch of players needing minutes.

As part of the plan to quickly integrate Bejamin Sesko, after two appearances off the bench, the Slovenian could also start in Lincolnshire.
