With a young core featuring Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, and Amen Thompson, the Rockets exceeded expectations in 2024-25.
But their first-round playoff exit against the Golden State Warriors exposed a missing piece for true contention.
As the offseason looms, speculation is picking up about a blockbuster trade that could elevate Houston to championship status, with one Western Conference star emerging as a potential target.
Bleacher Report’s Timothy Rapp recently outlined a compelling scenario for the Rockets’ next move.
“The Houston Rockets may end up being in the Kevin Durant sweepstakes, but if they lose out (or decide against a pursuit), inquiring about Ja Morant’s availability would make sense,” Rapp wrote.
“Houston still seems like it is a move away from being a genuine contender in the loaded West, and adding a player like Morant would either give the team a pair of playmakers if Fred VanVleet is signed to a long-term deal or allow Morant to take over the point guard duties. A deal built around Jalen Green and future draft capital could make sense for the Rockets while keeping themselves on the same timeline, given Morant’s age. Houston may ultimately opt for continuity next season, but you’d have to imagine they’d at least inquire if Morant became available.”

Despite Memphis Grizzlies GM Zach Kleiman’s February 2025 statement that Morant is untouchable, the Grizzlies’ recent moves, including trading Desmond Bane to Orlando and firing coach Taylor Jenkins, have fueled trade rumors.
Morant’s 2024-25 season was solid but marred by injuries, including a hip issue that sidelined him for Game 4 of Memphis’ first-round sweep at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
For Houston, Morant’s explosive athleticism and playmaking could address their half-court offensive struggles. Pairing him with Sengun in pick-and-rolls could unlock new dimensions.
Memphis, meanwhile, could view Green as a high-upside scorer to pair with Jaren Jackson Jr.
Morant’s popularity and past success make a trade unlikely, but the Rockets should still inquire, as noted by Rapp.
