Apple’s ecosystem and its many devices are known for being the most reliable, but like any other electronic device, they can run into issues. If you’re consuming content on an Apple TV and have recently had trouble using its remote, you can try resetting it. This is the first thing Apple recommends you do to fix issues with navigating menus, controlling playback, or activating Siri. In this guide, we’ll help you reset your Apple TV remote and get it working properly again.

Reset Apple TV Remote

You can reset your Apple TV remote to unpair the remote from Apple TV. This will reboot the Apple TV remote and automatically re-pair it to the TV. The process is pretty much the same whether you’re using the Siri Remote or the Apple TV Remote. Here’s how:

  1. On your Siri Remote or Apple TV, long press the TV/Control center button and Turn down the volume for about 5 seconds. You can also hold the buttons until the status light on your Apple TV turns off and then back on.

You have now successfully reset your Apple TV remote. Upon resetting/restarting, the remote will automatically pair with your Apple TV with a single button press. If not, you can refer to the steps below to manually pair it with the TV.

Re-pair the Apple TV remote

If the remote remains disconnected from the TV after the reset process, you can manually re-pair it to the TV. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Turn on Apple TV and hold the remote 3 to 4 inches (8 to 10 cm) away from the TV box.
  2. On your Apple TV remote, long press the Back button and Increase the volume for 5 seconds. If you are using a 1st generation Siri Remote, long press the button Menu button and Increase the volume press the button for 2 seconds instead.

Re-pair the Apple TV remote

  1. In some cases, the TV will ask you to place the remote on top of the TV to complete pairing.
  2. Once pairing is successful, a “Remote connected” notification appears at the top right of your TV screen.

That’s pretty much it. With these steps, you can reset your Apple TV remote and re-pair it without any hassle. While resetting the remote can fix many button or pairing issues, it may not be enough to fix an Apple TV not responding issue or connection failures. To help you fix these issues, we have prepared a dedicated guide to fix Apple TV remote not working issues. Apple also allows you to use your iPhone to control Apple TV, in case nothing works.

We hope we were able to help you fix your Apple TV remote with this guide. If you have any doubts regarding the process or any of the steps, let us know in the comments.
