History of Manchester United vs Manchester City
The Manchester derby is one of the longest running battles in English football with Their first meeting dates back to 1881three years after United were formed and just over 12 months after City were created.
Despite their often contrasting fortunes, the rivalry has continued to burn on both sides of the city, and City are unlikely to tie in overall wins for at least another decade.
In all competitions, since 1881, the two teams have faced each other a total of 190 times, with 78 wins for United, 60 for the cityand 53 ties.

Man United vs Man City in the FA Cup
FA Cup clashes between the two teams have been few and far between over the years; the first came in the 1891 FA Cup, when City were still known as Ardwick AFC, when United won 5-1.
City got their revenge in the 1925/26 competition, winning 3-0 in the semi-final, before losing to Bolton Wanderers in the final.
City continued their impressive record in FA Cup derbies with a victory over United in 1955, before losing 3-0 in a fourth-round derby in 1970 that ended their reign as champions.
United won the next three FA Cup ties as their paths began to separate in the 1990s and early 2000s, and the two post-2008 clashes provided for memorable occasions, with one victory each. City’s victory in the 2011 semi-final thanks to a Yaya Touré goal set them on course for glory and their first major trophy in 35 years.
Their most recent meeting was in the 2024 final, when teenage stars Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo scored to secure a 2-1 victory and snatch the trophy. That defeat avenged the Red Devils the year before when two Ilkay Gundogan goals from outside the box gave City a 2-1 win and the trophy.

Goater’s intervention saw some intermittent solidity for City, as they lost just two of their next seven Premier League battles, before emerging victorious at Old Trafford, in the last derby before the 2008 rescission.
The new financial injection did not mean an instant changing of the guard as United continued to enjoy the derby, with Michael Owen’s last-gasp goal in a 4-3 thriller in 2009 one of the most memorable goals of his career.

A late header from Paul Scholes, in the first leg, ensured United achieved the ‘Premier League double’ over City in 2009/10, a feat they did not repeat until 2019/20 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Guardiola won four of his first six Manchester derbies in the Premier League, from 2016 to 2019, and despite some back-and-forth, the arrival of Erling Haaland has added another layer to City.
