As hosts of the 2024 Copa América, the United States hopes to lay the foundation on which to build its trip to the 2026 World Cup by hosting 16 teams from North and South America for a special edition of the CONMEBOL championship.
Fans will expect the USMNT to at least reach the knockout stage, where they will hope to win a single-elimination game, something they haven’t done at the World Cup level since 2002.

How can the United States win the 2024 Copa América?
First, the United States must advance from the first round, which consists of four groups made up of four teams.
If they qualify as one of the top two teams in Group C, the United States will reach the quarterfinals. At that point, the competition becomes a single-elimination format: the winner of each match will advance to the semifinals; The winners of those two ties will reach the final, where the winners of a single match at the Hard Rock Stadium will become champions of the Copa América.

The United States will begin the Copa América against the lowest-ranked team in Group C, Bolivia, and is expected to win that game at the home of the Dallas Cowboys.
From there, things get tougher with the match as they take on CONCACAF opponents Panama in their second match since Atlanta. Group play concludes with a brutally difficult finish against in-form Uruguay, who sit second in the CONMEBOL 2026 World Cup standings after the first six games.

The United States’ path to the 2024 Copa América final
If the United States finishes in the top two of its Copa América group and qualifies for the knockout phase, it would largely know its path to the final.
Only the location of a potential quarterfinal would depend on their final position in Group C, as the USA would play in Las Vegas if they finish first in the standings, while they would play in Glendale, AZ if they finish second. That match would face the first or second place team in Group D, which includes Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay and Costa Rica.
From there, they would be locked into the semifinal in Charlotte, North Carolina, if they advance beyond the quarterfinal round, where they would play the other qualifier from Group D or a rematch against a qualifier from their own Group C.
Making the final four would guarantee the United States at least one more match regardless of the outcome: victory would take the United States to the final in Miami, while a loss in the semifinals would see them stay in Charlotte for the third-place match.
The United States would not be able to face teams like Argentina, Mexico or Canada until the final match or for third place, since those nations have been drawn on the opposite side of the draw.
